In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him (Ecclesiastes 7:14).
Throughout Ecclesiastes 7, a contrast is made between living wisely, with an awareness of life's fragility, and living foolishly, blindly pursuing its pleasures:
A good name is better than precious ointment,
and the day of death than the day of birth.
It is better to go to the house of mourning
than to go to the house of feasting,
for this is the end of all mankind,
and the living will lay it to heart.
Sorrow is better than laughter,
for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
(Ecclesiastes 7:1-4)
We see in this passage that wisdom takes all things to mind, acknowledging death, sorrow, and failure, while folly blindly assumes to know what tomorrow will bring. James 4:13-15 speaks further to how we should approach each day, humbly preparing for whatever God may call us to: Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit" —yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."

The Pursuit | The Pursuit: Enjoying Your Life

Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.
[Ecclesiastes 5:18-20]
The author of Ecclesiastes knew that to experience joy and find pleasure amidst the turmoil of life could only be quantified as a gift from God. As James states, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures [James 1:16-18]. The same God who chose us to be the "firstfruits" of his creation also chose to give us satisfaction in the temporal, carnal, and fading things of this world, despite our propensity to pollute and idolize them. Still, he knew that these temporal things would never fully satisfy, only barely reflecting the true beauty and joy found in knowing him. CS Lewis infamously describes this dichotomy in The Weight of Glory:
"It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased."

The Pursuit | The Pursuit: Fearing God

Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 reads,
"Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore, let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool's voice with many words.
When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear [Ecclesiastes 5:1-7]."
We do indeed serve a powerful God. He is to be esteemed, known, and relied on. He is worthy of our praise, demanding of our attention, and able to accomplish his work in any way he chooses. Proverbs 1:7 says that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge," while John Piper describes fearing God this way:
"Fearing God means that God is, in your mind and heart, so powerful, so holy, and so awesome that you would not dare to run away from him, but only to run to him. Fearing God is not another requirement, it's the way you come to Jesus. You come reverently, humbly, without any presumption that you deserve anything, or that he owes you anything. You come trembling, and with a heart that is broken and contrite. "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling [Philippians 2:12]." Tremble if you ever feel any inclination to leave this God. There is only destruction away from him."

The Pursuit | The Pursuit: Community

While the theme of vanity continues in Ecclesiastes 4, a new wisdom is revealed in verses 7-12:
Again, I saw vanity under the sun: one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, "For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure? This also is vanity and an unhappy business.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him-- a threefold cord is not quickly broken. [Ecclesiastes 4:7-12].
As believers, we can acknowledge that God has designed us to live life together: In Romans 12, with the old testament veil of the law finally removed and Jesus' work on the cross complete, the apostle Paul tells us just how we're to serve one another within the body of Christ:
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality [Romans 12: 9-12].

The Pursuit | The Pursuit: Introduction to Ecclesiastes

Darrin Patrick opens "The Pursuit" sermon series with an introduction to the book of Ecclesiastes.
Meaninglessness, vanity, chasing after the wind: These are what man's pursuits amount to according to the author of Ecclesiastes. The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. Man strives, accomplishes, innovates, struggles and overcomes...only to die; buried, useless, forgotten.
Thousands of years later, little has changed. We continue to chase after that same elusive wind, enslaving ourselves to money, passion and ambition: returning day after day to our self-imposed stresses, worries, and insecurities. Certainly the author of Ecclesiastes had us in mind.
Boston College professor of philosophy, Peter Kreeft, argues that Ecclesiastes has, in fact, become the logical scriptural starting point for today's society: "Ecclesiastes is the one book in the Bible that modern man most needs to read, for it is Lesson One, and the rest of the Bible is Lesson Two." Indeed, if we can't identify our condition in the first place, how can we diagnose our need for Jesus?
Kreeft continues, "[Ecclesiastes] is inspired monologue. God in His providence has arranged for this one book of mere rational philosophy to be included in the canon of Scripture because this too is divine revelation. It is divine revelation precisely in being the absence of divine revelation. It is like the silhouette of the rest of the Bible . . . In this book God reveals to us exactly what life is when God does not reveal to us what life is."

Obedience is one of the most difficult Biblical principals to grasp, as we know that while in our earthly bodies we'll never be completely free of sin. In John 11, Jesus makes clear that obeying is for our benefit, that by it we may bear much fruit and our joy may be complete. As we abide consistently in Christ, relying on his strength and handing over our will in place of his, he is faithful to change and enable us to walk obediently, addressing our sin while bringing clarity and specificity into our lives.
"If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full" [John 11:7-11].

As we discussed in Praying with Jesus, we mustn't let the busyness of life or religious routine hinder us from spending quality time with God. Even when our goals seem to fall in line with the gospel, our obedience must work along with our prayer lives, as we allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us into his work.
In Luke 10, we read about Mary and Martha, and the importance of setting aside time to slow down and simply listen: "Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” [Luke 10:38-42].

Love Lies | Sex is Easy

Pastor Bob Bickford concludes the Love Lies series, confronting the ever-present cultural myth that tells us "sex is easy".
While the "love lie" suggesting that sex is easy is one of the most pervasive in our culture, statistically, it's one of the easiest misconceptions to refute. In week one of our Love Lies series we learned that a staggering 20% of marriages are considered "sexless", or seriously lacking physical intimacy. Last week we discussed that God's will for our marriages is that we operate as one with our spouses (sex included), not "face to face" (putting one another in front of God) but "shoulder to shoulder" (serving him together).
In 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses these issues as they relate to our physical bodies, explaining that sexual immorality must be avoided at all costs, while further emphasizing God's design for physical oneness in marriage: "The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body" [1 Corinthians 6:13b]. "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body" [6:19-20].
"But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband" [7:2]. "Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control"[7:5].

Love Lies | My Spouse will Complete Me

Darrin Patrick addresses the cultural "love lie" that suggests our spouses can complete us, clarifying how we're to serve one another in our marriages as we continue to serve God.
In Genesis 2:24-25 the covenant of marriage is introduced by God as a pathway to oneness: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed" [Genesis 2:24-25].
We know that God's very being reflects a nature of self-giving. He gave Jesus for us, while Jesus, obedient to the point of death, gave himself for all. As we apply these principles to marriage, the call to serve one another is obvious, yet true Biblical oneness doesn't come through devotion to our spouse alone, but rather when, together, we devote ourselves to God.
In 1 Corinthians the apostle Paul cautions against marriage becoming an idol in our lives, urging that we remain uninhibitedly devoted to the Lord: "The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord" [1 Corinthians 7:33-35].

Love Lies | Talk is Cheap

Pastor Darrin continues the Love Lies sermon series with Talk is Cheap, expounding on principles that lead to good communication within our marriages and explaining what the Bible has to say about the power our words possess.
Proverbs 18:21 tells us that "death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."
While we may not think of our words as possessing the power of life and death, the way we communicate does, in fact, yield a return in our lives. The Amplified Bible puts it this way: "They who indulge in it [the power of the tongue] shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]."
This theme of deliberate and watchful communication is present throughout the Proverbs. We learn that the wise are "slow to speak" and "quick to listen", that we should answer each other "gently", avoiding "harshness which only stirs up anger", and that our words are to be few and purposeful: "Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him" [Proverbs 29:20].
James perhaps describes the power, and also the duality the tongue can possess most intently in [James] 3:10: "For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so."

Love Lies | Love is a Feeling

Pastor Darrin tells us what Paul is really saying in 1 Corinthians 13, how it relates to our relationships and marriages, and why cultural misconceptions often distort our approach to love. We encourage you to invite friends throughout this highly practical and socially relevant series.
It's no secret that the "love" most often portrayed in modern culture is sexual, romantic, and conveyed as something we "just feel". We also know that God created sex for our pleasure. Yet, when we investigate, we see that sex and romance are rarely associated with love in the Bible. Jesus, in fact, describes love (for God and one another) as the necessary action if we're to attempt to live out the greatest commandment, while the apostle Paul makes clear that, without love, even the gifts of the Holy Spirit can be rendered ineffective:
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing" [1 Corinthians 13:1-3].

Campus Media | Theology of Inviting

Pastor Darrin Patrick clarifies the meaning of biblical and evangelical contextualization as he describes how our church should continuously be inviting those around us.
If we claim to follow Christ, we know we must endeavor to love one another genuinely. We should show an eagerness to invite people into all areas of our lives, remembering that it is Jesus, and the incorruptible seed of God's word that changes people's hearts, not our persuasive skill or eloquence. "But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect". [1 Peter 3:15].

Jesus & | Jesus & Christianity

Dictionary.com defines the noun Christian as a person who believes in Jesus Christ; a Christ Follower. But to truly be Christ-followers we mustn't simply believe that Jesus existed, we must believe that he was who he said he was. CS Lewis famously addresses the contradiction of the strictly "moral" Jesus in Mere Christianity:
"A man who said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse."
Certain Atheists who acknowledge Christ's existence but don't believe he was the son of God have criticized Lewis for forcing an "either/or" scenario upon his readers: "[Lewis] habitually confronts his readers with the alleged necessity of choosing between two alternatives when there are in fact other options to be considered." -John Beversluis
Yet, the boldness of a man claiming to be the son of God lends credibility to Lewis' point. Jesus wasn't a carpenter claiming to be a poet or a peasant claiming to be a king, he was a man, who, accompanied by signs and wonders, laid claim as the Son of God.
The magnitude of this is so striking that Lewis' "either/or" becomes unquestionably reasonable, and it is Jesus' very claim itself, accompanied by the belief that he existed, died, and rose again to reconcile the world to himself, that the entire Christian faith is founded upon. It is the fundamental, non-negotiable core, and it puts Christianity as simply another religion to death along with the idea that any number of good works can save us.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God," [Ephesians 2:8].
Dietrich Bonhoeffer perhaps sums up true Christianity best, without the constraints of tradition or religious requirement in Letters and Papers from Prison: "To be a Christian does not mean to be religious in a particular way, to make something of oneself (a sinner, a penitent, or a saint) on the basis of some method or other, but to be a man-- not a type of man, but the man that Christ creates in us. It is not the religious act that makes the Christian, but participation in the sufferings of God in the secular life."
Finally, as CS Lewis points out: “The New Testament talks about men “being born again”, “putting on Christ”, “having the mind of Christ”. Put right out of your head the idea that these are only fancy ways of saying that Christians are to read what Christ said and try to carry it out – as a man may read what Plato or Marx said and try to carry it out. They mean something much more than that. They mean that a real Person, Christ, here and now, in that very room where you are saying your prayers, is doing things to you. It is not a question of a good man who died two thousand years ago. It is a living Man, still as much a man as you, and still as much God as when He created the world, really coming and interfering with your very self; killing the old natural self in you and replacing it with the kind of self He has. At first, only for moments. Then for longer periods. Finally, if all goes well, turning you permanently into a different sort of thing; into a new little Christ, a being which, in its own small way, has the same kind of life as God; which shares in His power, joy, knowledge, and eternity.”

Jesus & | Jesus & Afterlife

Hebrews 11 is all about faith. Throughout the chapter we see example after example of influential Old Testament icons acting in faith: men and women who were certain of what they hoped for and proved it by their actions. "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" [Hebrews 11:1].
Yet, later in the chapter we learn that even these founders of our faith didn't inherit what was promised during their earthly lives. The chapter concludes with text showing that their hope was in something greater: "But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city" [Hebrews 11:16].
In 1 Peter 1:8, Peter describes the "salvation of our souls" as the "outcome of our faith". Salvation, therefore, is the end product, the result of believing in Jesus, and the reward is eternity spent with him. "Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls." [1 Peter 1:8]. Peter later urges that we set our hope "fully on the grace that will be brought to [us] at the revelation of Jesus Christ" [1:13], throwing off our sinful nature out of reverence toward God.
The Apostle Paul describes it this way: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better..." [Philippians 1:21-23.]
"To be with Christ". This is the afterlife we yearn for.

In the information overload of American politics, Jesus' simple command to love one another is often absent. Amidst the incessant slandering, belittling, and grandiosity that invades our culture during the political season it's easy to numb ourselves, turn away from God's word, and join in with the pervading voices around us.
As believers we must remember that our calling is heavenly and our hope isn't in the rulers of this world. "For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come." [Hebrews 13:14]. Instead of engaging in the hype this political season, let's set our hearts on Jesus, praying continually for our leaders, for our country, and for God's will to be done, all-the-while recalling that we inherit a kingdom that cannot be shaken [Hebrews 12:28].
No matter the degree of incensed passion around us and no matter how involved we may become politically, God's will for how we're to conduct ourselves is clear: We must walk in love.

In Colossians 4, Paul urges that we pray continually for the advancement of the kingdom, always ready to make the most of every opportunity:
"Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison-- that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person" [Colossians 4:2-6].
